Empowering the LANE meeting in Fort Worth, Texas November 2007

Empowering the LANE meeting in Fort Worth, Texas November 2007.

Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes Campaign began its two-year journey September 2006 at a kick off ceremony in Washington D.C. An Unprecedented collaboration of providers, consumers and other stakeholders formed this campaign to improve care and quality of life for residents.

Arkansas' nursing homes and hospital based recuperative care units made the commitment to their residents, families, and staff by becoming the first state in the nation to have 100% participation in the Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes Campaign November 2007. As a result, Arkansas LANE (Local Area Networks for Excellence) members and consumers were honored at the Interchange: Empowering the LANE meeting in Fort Worth, Texas November 2007.

By joining the campaign, facilities became part of an exciting and effective quality improvement initiative with access to:

  • State-of-the-art, evidence-based information and training materials which assist in improving performance in eight areas that would increase customer satisfaction;

  • Learning how to apply educational information to everyday practice by using a set of standardized process frameworks, ideas on implementation and a consistent approach to quality improvement in order to attain desirable outcomes;

  • Recognition for their nursing home's commitment to quality by setting targets and tracking the strides they are making;

  • Becoming part of an ongoing learning collaborative and sharing their best practices with nursing homes and learning what does or does not work;

  • Campaign's popular Webinars/teleconferences on each of the eight campaign goals;

  • Networking help to create a positive work environment to enhance staff retention by promoting pride in work, team approach with relationship building with residents, family members through consistent assignment;

  • Utilization of a multitude of quality initiatives and enhance their own quality improvement efforts from what they have learned in regard to culture change, etc.

Quoting Mary Jane Koren, MD, MPH Chair of the Advancing Excellence Steering Committee, Assistant Vice President, The Commonwealth's Funds Program on Quality of Care for Frail Elders,

"When Advancing Excellence started we thought it would be a two-year effort. However, initial successes at measurably improving care for residents, combined with the positive feedback we've received from participants, signaled the need to keep the momentum going and build on the solid foundation we've already created. Therefore, we've decided to continue the campaign and redouble our efforts to improve the quality of life for the residents and staff of our country's nursing homes."
